Finding a job

by Rob
(England)

I'm 21 and I'm having trouble coping with life in general really. I was made to leave my family home about 2 years ago because I refused to get a job and I was causing disruption and financial problems as a result of this.

My reasons for not getting a job were that I have low self esteem and also have trouble talking to people because of this plus the fact I'm quite paranoid about my appearance (I have a burn on my face) plus tons of other embarrassing body issues.

I was told to get help by my mum but didn't want to as I was afraid that my mum would find out that I smoked cannabis if it came up in a therapy session.

I've been living at my friends house now for almost 2 years and the situation is the same although I'm not being pressured into finding a job by the owner of the home (friends mum).

I need help with my confidence issues but to get help I need to speak to someone and that pretty much is the issue itself.

Life's problems

Thank you for contacting Positive Personal Growth. Life is about choices. We choose to do things, or we choose not to.

Whilst I understand you have low self esteem issues, you choose to remain at home and not attempt to get a job. This may seem harsh to you, but unless you make the effort to change how you are nothing will happen and this will be the pattern of your life for ever.

Many people suffer with low self esteem, lack of confidence and other horrible issues, but they get on with life they push themselves and become determined to change how they are. They move out into the community, they seek their independence and rely on themselves, even though they find it hard, they stay determined to succeed.

Can you ask your mum to help you and take you to therapy? I am sure she will be happy to assist when you decide to do something to better your circumstances. Let her know that you would like her to go with you but that you want to speak to the therapist on your own. If you don't want to ask your mum then maybe someone else that you trust may be prepared to go with you.

You are the only one who can alter your circumstances, and do something with your life.

I sincerely hope you will think really hard about getting the help you need to make your life more fulfilling.

Love
Kay
