I have spent the last few days thinking about writing this newsletter. I've been putting it off, telling myself I'll do it tomorrow only to discover that when tomorrow arrives, I've thought of something else to do, and so never got round to doing it.

I guess, truth be told, I have been procrastinating rather a lot, just lately, and so maybe I should talk about procrastination.

As I am writing this a neighbour has just started up a very noisy piece of equipment in his garden. I feel the powers that be are testing me! They are giving me a good reason to put off what I am doing - again - and do something else.

This proves to me that the only way to get rid of procrastination is with a positive mind set, and staying with it no matter what.

Sometimes it seems easier to have a 'can't be bothered' attitude, but unfortunately, along with this comes frustration with yourself, and a feeling of lack of motivation, which can be very tiring and disheartening.

The more you put off doing something, the lower and more dejected you feel about yourself, and so of course, the lower you get, the less energy you have to get motivated.

It's a horrible feeling when you can't get motivated isn't it? When you stop and really think about what is causing this procrastination, you have won half the battle.

Have you ever had a phone call you didn't really want to make? Have you kept putting it off throughout the week, telling yourself you'll do it tomorrow. As each day went by, have you found yourself becoming more and more unmotivated about making the call?

Finally, when you have no option because the time has almost run out, have you made the call that's given you that sinking feeling inside, only to find when you finally speak to the person that - hey - there's no problem whatsoever. As you put the phone down feeling relief, have you then asked yourself why on earth didn't you do it straight away and save yourself all that worry!

I realize this is perhaps a minor example, and there are far bigger reasons for procrastination, but the feelings are the same. When you act instantly you can save yourself an awful lot of unnecessary worry, sometimes over nothing at all.

So how do you rid yourself of procrastination? By having a positive attitude, and staying determined to sort your problem out as soon as it arises. When you can keep this positive mindset you can definitely say goodbye to procrastination.

Try it next time something arises that you don't want to deal with, or the next time you have to make that dreaded phone call.

Dealing with the problem straight away really is the best way to go!
